Happy New Year!

I woke up this morning filled with gratitude that this year is finally over.  We made it.  It's the last day of 2020. And while it may be largely symbolic, I am so happy for a fresh start tomorrow and the dawn of a new year. I also wanted to take some time to create one last piece, on the last day of 2020.  I have not been devoting much time to my studio practice as of late, so I was really surprised at how quickly this piece came together, and how much I love it! I've named it Auguri, which means "Best Wishes" in Italian.  Best wishes is my hope for everyone in this new year, but also a...

Past and Present.

On the fourth of July, utterly sick of working on images of insects, I pulled out a badly damaged photograph from the early 1900s.  It was of my great, great Aunt Lulu, who came to Colorado around 1908.  I started digitally repairing the photograph.  Once I was finished, I found another photograph to repair.  And I did this, quite manically, for a week.  There was something so soothing about being able to fix the damage that time and neglect had done to the images. I'm Making Lemonade...

Seven days ago, I was eagerly packing a cargo van full of artwork, so excited to get out on the road and sell some artwork.  I hadn't had a show since December and was really looking forward to my Spring show line-up. I had been watching the news like a hawk, knowing that it was only a matter of time before events around the US started to close down.  I knew there was a possibility of my Spring Art Fairs being cancelled.  But the Scottsdale Art Festival was sure to go on- they'd sent multiple emails assuring us of this.  Two days of driving had made me unable to obsessively check the news, and by the time I got...

Russia, 2003. Part III

My departure from St. Petersburg was quick.  I suddenly decided that I needed to get out of Russia, headed to the Internet cafe to buy a ticket and was home a week later.  The week before I left I shot as much as I could, but again, the lack of sun proved difficult, especially as it was now November and we had less than 2 hours of daylight each day.  The series I created from my time in Russia, was short and sweet.  Maybe less than fifteen photos.    I called the series "Six Sunny Days" as by my calculations, that was how many truly sunny days I had over the course of three months.  And while I love the photos,...

The Archives: Russia, 2003, Part 2

There is this moment as your plane is landing, when you look out the window and one of two things happen:  You see the destination sprawled out below you, and are overcome with excitement for the opportunities that await you.  Or you look at the destination below you, and you are suddenly aware of how naive you have been in your idealization of this location.  Russia was the latter.  I began my TEFL class the following day.  Turns out that I had also overestimated my understanding of the English Language, as I failed my TEFL class not once, not twice, but three times.  Much of my failure probably had to do with the fact that Vodka was dirt cheap, and...
